1 + 1 = 3 Habit 6: SYNERGIZE!!!! = put your energies together to create something more and better

What is synergy? It’s when 2+ people work together to create a better solution than either of them could have come up with on their own. It’s when 2+ people work together to create a better solution than either of them could have come up with on their own. It’s not your way, or my way, but a better way. It’s not your way, or my way, but a better way. PSST! Why are the geese, who fly in “V” formation, a good example of synergy?

Synergy is NOT… Dominance: 1+1 = 1 (other person = 0) Dominance: 1+1 = 1 (other person = 0) Compromise : = 1.5 (partial satisfaction) Compromise : = 1.5 (partial satisfaction) Cooperation: = 2 (math) Cooperation: = 2 (math)It’s = 3! Get it? You get more out of it together because you’re finding new and creative solutions to your problems and you both benefit

Characteristics SYNERGY Open-minded Open-minded Team work (sports, orchestra, etc) Team work (sports, orchestra, etc) Creative new solutions Creative new solutions Celebrating differences (I am happy to know) Celebrating differences (I am happy to know) Closed-minded Closed-minded Individual work Individual work Not finding new solutions Not finding new solutions Thinking you’re always right. Thinking you’re always right. Tolerating differences (I am not happy and I DO NOT want to know) Tolerating differences (I am not happy and I DO NOT want to know) NOT SYNERGY

BOTTOM LINE: We are all different –We learn differently –We have different attitudes/characteristics –We see differently (perception and paradigms) –We have different values/cultures –We LOOK and BEHAVE differently You don’t have to agree with what the differences are, but be aware and open to them. You don’t have to agree with what the differences are, but be aware and open to them.

WATCH OUT! Shunners - do not know, do not accept, not happy about differences Shunners - do not know, do not accept, not happy about differences Tolerators – know, accept, but not happy about differences Tolerators – know, accept, but not happy about differences 3 ROADBLOCKS: 3 ROADBLOCKS: 1. Ignorance 1. Ignorance 2. Prejudice 2. Prejudice 3. Cliques 3. Cliques All of the above contributes to the hatred and racism in the world because differences scare people and they consider differences a threat. All of the above contributes to the hatred and racism in the world because differences scare people and they consider differences a threat. Celebrators – want to know and happy about differences

5 steps to synergy! 1. Define the problem 2. See it their way (seek to understand) 3. See it your way (be understood) 4. Brainstorm a solution 5. Come up with a solution you both agree on ***DISCLAIMER*** Success is not guaranteed!!!! But you should: 1) listen to others 2) + express yourself 3) DIFFERENCES ARE A STRENGTH NOT A WEAKNESS

Think of synergy as a symphony: originality originality no competition no competition individual effort individual effort common effort common effort include everyone include everyone Result: better and more positive !!!

The Cold Within Six humans trapped by circumstance In bleak and bitter cold. Each one possessed a stick of wood, Or so the story’s told. Their dying fire was in need of logs. The first man held his back. For of the faces round the fire, He noticed one was black. The next man looking across the way, Saw one not of his church, And couldn’t bring himself to give The fire his stick of birch. The third one sat in tattered clothes. He gave his coat a hitch. Why should his log be put to use To warm the idle rich? The rich man just sat back and thought Of the wealth he had in store, And how to keep what he had earned From the lazy shiftless poor. The black man’s face bespoke revenge As the fire passed from his sight. For all he saw in his stick of wood Was a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group Did nothing, except for gain. Giving only to those who gave Was how he played the game. Their logs held tight in death’s still hands Was proof of human sin. They didn’t die from the cold without They died from the cold within.
