Welcome to 7 th Grade Accelerating Literacy Skills Class! Ms. Watkins

This Evening’s Agenda Thank you! Ms. Watkins Reading Workshop Writing Workshop Test—Reteach—Test Formative Assessments Classroom Theme: ROAR! Visit my Website!

About Me: James Madison University ◦ Harrisonburg City Schools ◦ Rockingham County Schools ◦ Prince William County Schools I enjoy long distance running and triathlons. Personal Motto: It never hurts to ask!

Reading Workshop Goals: ◦ To encourage students to be lifelong readers ◦ To develop critical reading skills. Means: ◦ Book Clubs ◦ Mentor Texts ◦ Independent Reading ◦ One-on-One Conferences

Writing Workshop Goals: ◦ To nurture lifelong writers ◦ To increase writing fluency & ability Means: ◦ Independent Writing (Journals) ◦ Topics Generated & Selected by Students ◦ Reading as Writers ◦ Writing Groups ◦ One-on-One Conferences

Teach – Retest – Test Students learn at different rates. Our goal as teachers is to make sure that each student masters the skills, even if it takes more than one assessment. 69% or lower on summative assessment: Students are required to attend a re-teach session and re-take. All other students have the option to re- teach/test.

Formative Assessments Daily assessments are used to determine students’ progress toward mastery of learning goals. Formative assessments do not count toward the report card grade.

ROAR It is important that our Lions exhibit the PBIS ROAR. Respect one another. Take Ownership of your actions and work. Come ready to Achieve your best work. Be Responsible for your assignments and materials.

How can I help? Talk to your student about his or her reading and writing each week: ◦ What book are you reading? ◦ What are some writing topics that you’ve explored? Donate an item to our Workshop Center: ◦ Magic Markers, Glue sticks, Card Stock, Stickers, Tissues, Index Cards, Young Adult Novels

How to contact me: My information is available on the Lunsford Website. Feel free to me! (Allow for one day for a response, please.)
