ROBERT LANZER, CAROLINE MURRAY, JINEA ADAMS THE WEST END/WEST FOURTH STREET

MAP OF WEST END (HISTORIC DISTRICT)

INTERVIEW #1: RESIDENT Bret, 28, Graduate Business Student at Wake Forest, Resident Loved the collaboration between a youthful atmosphere and a historic district Moving well towards modernity Wishes it were more “neighborhood-like” “Sometimes, it genuinely feels like a big tourist attraction than an actual community.” Hanes Park is a huge plus Could be more artsy: “Winston-Salem is very much an art town, I’ve noticed, and the West End needs to embrace that a little more.” Homelessness is a minor problem in certain sections Wishes to see more involvement in solving the problems of the city from people on the West End, who have always been cordial and generous, for the most part

INTERVIEW #2: EMPLOYEE Rebecca, 38, Employee at Burke Street Pizza Has lived and worked in the area on and off for over a decade Seen lots of change in the past few years with the historical district, reinvigorating it to become one of Winston-Salem’s biggest go-to places Farmer’s Market: “There’s a bar [City Beverage] that holds one from April until November, but I miss the long, street-length farmer’s market held all year round” Didn’t find as many problems with the area; relatively content with her living and working situation, and loves the area Great business area that could use some more color Inclusion of Hanes Park makes the area “exceptional mixture of recreational spaces and social attractions,” but would love to see more natural landscapes in the area

INTERVIEW 3: EMPLOYEE Early 30’s Female Employee at Awake Church Working in West End for 7 years Enjoys more laid back atmosphere than downtown Has enjoyed changes with interesting shops moving into area Wishes there were less unused buildings and stores Sees homelessness as an issue in area Wishes there was a more accessible area or system for recycling and making the area clean
