UNIT 11 VIETNAM WAR/CIVIL RIGHTS REVIEW

Civil Rights 26 th Amendment- Right to vote reduced to 18. Troops could fight at 18 but not vote. Affirmative Action- created with intent to increase representation of different ethnic groups in employment and education. Title IX- denied participation based on gender of federally funded activities. Increased female participation in athletics. Tinker v. Des Moines- Protected rights of free expression for students War Powers Act of Presidents restricted on sending troops without congressional approval. Presidents consider it unconstitutional.

More Civil Rights… Criticism of the Great Society programs is that some people receiving government help had little motivation to work… Cold War led to increase funding in Math and Science. Chicano Mural Movement- Wall paintings that raised awareness of Mexican heritage.

Vietnam Domino Theory- That if one country fell to communism then another one would and so on. Basis for U.S. involvement in S.E. Asia. Containment- containing the spread of communism. Roy Benavidez- Texas soldier- saved several lives and received Medal of Honor A lot of people didn’t support the war- Television coverage led to protests. People used peace symbols/doves as a means of non- violent protest.

Vietnam continued.. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution- provided president to conduct acts of war in Vietnam. Tet Offensive- Surprise attack by North Vietnamese, strong psychological impact on U.S. troops. Vietnamization- training Vietnamese troops to fight and play major roles while slowly pulling out U.S. troops. Credibility Gap- People began being skeptical about statements put out by government. Soldiers gave different accounts than government did. Fall of Saigon- Marks end of war. Americans flee capital city in 1975
