A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings as well as promoting the artist in the most interesting way to get popularity. What is a music video?

Nickelback- Hero is a music video which promotes a film (spiderman) and the band. It has a story line as well as the band mixed together as a promotion. Whilst the band is on the tall building iconography is used as one of the bill boards has a spider on it which obviously links to the movie- the spider bill board is seen in shots which change between film scenes and the band performing in a city. This promotes both the band and the film and gives the viewer the impression that the band is performing to them. It centralises the image of the band through the focus on the simplicity of the instruments, making it not an extravagant performance but making the actual song lyrics more important than the performance. Examples

Wrecking ball by Miley Cyrus received 705,732,988 views and the raunchy aspects of it as well as the high entertainment factor of it. This video seems to detract from the meaning of the song and from the genre of the song and highlights the sexual tendencies instead making it less about the music and more about the performance. By this music video being highly controversial it gives the artist a definite advantage of getting noticed as any publicity can be seen as good publicity. Examples

Images of performance and promotion Nicki Minaj is famous for her figure. In her music video she uses this as both performance and promotion the music video not having much of a storyline just focuses on the female body. Ne-yo promotes himself in a different way as he is a character in his story line for his music video. He uses a common problem- relationship issues to relate to the viewer.
