Review of Important Terms The outer surface of your eye where light enters is made of a transparent layer of tissue called the cornea. The pupil is the dark circle that you see when you look at someone’s eye. It is actually just a hole that allows light to pass into the eye. The pupil is created by a circular band of muscle called the iris. When people refer to their eye colour, they are referring to the colour of the iris.

Review of Important Terms Rod cells help us detect shapes and movement in low light situations. Cone cells are photoreceptor cells used to detect colour. In humans, cone cells come in three types, each of which detects a different primary colour of red, green, or blue particularly well. Your retina is the inner, light-sensitive layer of the eye covering the back wall of your eye; includes the rods and cones

Image formed by Retina The image formed on the retina is inverted, but your brain interprets the image as being right side up.

Check Your Blind Spot! Your blind spot is the area at the back of your eye where the optic nerve is attached to the retina. This optic nerve goes to your brain.

Benham’s Disk – How?? Your eye has three types of cones. Each type of cone is sensitive to a primary light colour – red, green, and blue. Each cone has a different response time before it can see its colour. Your eyes and brain see white only when all three types of cones are responding equally. The imbalance of the time it takes for each cone to see colour explains why you see colours when Benham’s Disk is rotating.

Rotating Primary Colours When an equal amount of each primary light colour is mixed, this will create the colour… WHITE!!!
