15 Construction schedule Beam will start in April 2009, 15month from now. Installation of almost all components in 2008 –SC magnets from Feb, Target/Horn from July, –SC/Horn in-situ ope. test from 2009, Intrlock inspection Mar Schedule is tight –Need careful coordination with civil construction/accelerator commissioning schedule but WE CAN DO (if requested budget is secured). 16 Hadron production measurements at CERN-SPS NA61 (SHINE) experiment Thick target Thin target Measure hadron (  /K) production from Graphite target –to predict Near and far energy spectra (<2~3%) Near to far spectrum extrapolation (<2~3%)  e contami. (from K,  ) (<2~3%) First data taking successfully finished in Oct., 2007 (1month) –Beam: 30GeV proton –Thin target (2cm t 4%int ):~ 500k int. –Replica target (90cm, 80%int): ~180k int. (Goal: 1M int. for both) –Intense analysis started Measurements in 2008 planned –DAQ rate: ~1Hz  ~100Hz

17 Request for beam In the 1 st J-PARC PAC, T2K is approved with –to achieve T2K goal sin 2 2  13 =0.008 (90%CL,  =0) in ~5yrs (w/ design intensity) Highest priority in the first few years is –To reach the highest sensitivity, and –To publish the physics results We set our first goal –Sensitivity of better than current upper bound ~0.14 (90%CL, CHOOZ) To achieve this goal, we request –100kW x 10 7 s beam by around summer 2010 (Proposal)

18 Summary Many milestones achieved in 2007 –Water problem during TS excavation fixed and UG part completed on schedule –Huge Helium vessel of TS installed and passed vacuum test on schedule –Long term full-current test of 1 st and 2 nd horn done –Horn full-system support test. (Operation test soon) –Day-1 Target Delivered, etc,… Beam line construction is on schedule Installation of most components in 2008 –SC mags inst. from Feb, Tgt/Horn from July, etc. –Careful coordination and hard work necessary We can start beam in Apr –If requested budget is secured Request 100kW x 10 7 s beam by around summer 2010 –To reach world highest sensitivity, and –to publish first physics result in 2010
