What we’ll cover… Roles Responsibilities Keys for success Strategic Planning Open floor discussion –What works for you?

Before we start our discussion… Keep in mind that when people are having FUN they are more motivated and focused on the overall outcome Take a minute to find what your board members are interested in.

In my opinion… Chapter Boards are only as strong as their Member at Large activity Teamwork is a Must! Diversity of Views!

Definition A President is one who presides, who sits in leadership. Originally, the term referred to the presiding officer of a ceremony or meeting but today it most commonly refers to an official with executive powers.

More direct definition… Instigator & Motivator

President’s Roles Provide leadership Represent the Society and the Chapter –Keep current with SCTE services –Serve as Chapter’s spokesperson –Promote the mission of SCTE locally Has overall responsibility for the development of potential, new and experienced board members –Recognize achievements of members

President’s Roles Identify and implement services/programs for chapter members Develops specific annual goals from the chapter’s strategic plan Ensures that the Chapter’s Bylaws are followed –send updated copy of bylaws to SCTE Chapter Support department each year

President’s Responsibilities Appoints standing committee chairs Monitors and supports the activities of chapter officers and committees Prepares and presides at Executive Committee and chapter meetings. –Arranges a minimum of 4 chapter board meetings per year. Ensures the submittal of required reports

Vice President’s Roles Responsible for assisting the President in coordinating and directing chapter operations and activities. –Filling vacant positions on chapter’s board. –Runs meeting or function when President is unable to attend –Assists in the planning and goal making process for chapter.

Vice President’s Responsibilities Manage the activities of committees that report directly to the Vice President, This position may also serve at the President’s direction to focus on certain aspects or needs

Examples of Vice Presidents VP of Membership/ Recruiting VP of Communications VP of Programming/ Training What does your chapter need?

Five Keys for Success Set objectives Gain commitment Delegate Supervise Recognize accomplishments

Set Objectives Setting objectives encourages good management practices Solidifies the leadership team Establishes accountability

Gain Commitment Asking for input establishes a sense of responsibility for accomplishing objectives Collectively determine the objectives for the year Creates a sense of unity and partnership with the Board and the membership.

Delegate and Supervise Define the specific outcome required. Agree upon the responsibilities and time frame. Inform others of who is coordinating the project. Follow-up.

Recognize Accomplishments Recognition gives an individual a sense of appreciation and accomplishment. Recognizing volunteers for their contributions enhances their performance and increases their level of participation.

Importance of Strategic Planning Stimulates thinking about future Reveals ways to improve chapter events and communications Determines methods of recruiting and retaining membership Builds teamwork Develops future leadership

What works for your chapter? Let’s take the rest of our time and talk about real world experience that have been successful for other chapters.
