Assessment Summative assessment tests attainment of knowledge and skills and provides a gateway to the next stage of learning or career. Accreditation exams are an example of this. Formative assessment assists learning by doing, provides feedback, motivation and opportunities for group learning. ‘Pure’ formative assessment does not ‘count’ towards exam results or qualifications, so students can collaborate and quote freely. An example of formative assessment would be where a student drafts an application and is then given feedback on strengths and weaknesses and guidance on the quality of the draft.
