The bobcat is one of the smallest wild cats in North America. Have you ever observed a magnificent bobcat? If you haven’t I am here to tell you about my amazing protection, fabulous description, my spectacular habitat, my different family life and my food. Our eyesight is better than a humans. Our favorite food is the snowshoe rabbit. We make piercing noises when we are threatened.

If you look closely you can see my muttonchops that make me look like I have a bow tie on. Although we look like our cousin the lynx we are not the same species. Bobcats possess a unique description.. My name is also short for bobbed cat because of my short tail that is about six inches long. I only weigh up to 15 to 30 pounds and about the size of a medium sized dog. I possess black tuffed ears and the easiest way to recognize me is my tail because the tip is dark black. I also have spotted markings help me blend into my habitat or surroundings (which I will tell you about later) and my fur ranges from a pale grey to a very reddish brownish. I have approximately 28 teeth in my small mouth my that help me rip through flesh and fur. The sharpest teeth in my mouth are called the carteeth, but I mainly use my canine teeth to grab my prey. I am very quiet on my forefeet and my long paws help me pounce on my prey that helps me know I can sneak up on about anything. Like most cats I am able to swim, but I don’t like it. Bobcats have extra long fur on each side of their face called muttonchops that make a bobcat look like its wearing a bow tie.

Bobcats lead a very solitary life. We don’t survive in groups although we spend much of our time hunting. Mating starts at late summer or early fall after mating the pair will hunt, eat and do everything together for several day or weeks. After they are completely done mating we proceed back to our regular lives and that is the only time bobcats spend time together all year long. Two months later the females discover shelter and give birth to about two to three kittens per litter. The kittens stay in their mother’s den for two months drinking milk and, after the two months mother brings back solid food. The mother even brings live food to show kittens how to kill the prey by biting the neck in a single bite. When the kittens are five months old their mother will teach them how to hunt. The mother banishes babies when they are older so mother can have new babies and will even chase the babies out of her territory. Bobcats learn to hunt at five months of age. Bobcats hunt together during the mating period.

Bobcats are very good hunters. We are carnivores or meat eaters and most hunting is at dawn or dusk when most rabbits, squirrels, weasels and other small animals have hard times seeing. I would watch for any movement and listen for any noise and small black tuffs on the tip of my ears act like an antennas. Once I spot my prey I pounce, attack and do anything that would help me discover my food. It may take me six to ten times attacking my prey before I catch it. I don’t think I mentioned this yet but my favorite food is the tasty snowshoe rabbit. The bobcat hunts any animal that is smaller than itself. My favorite food is the snowshoe rabbit

I don’t think I mentioned this yet but my favorite food is the tasty snowshoe rabbit. Bobcats mostly reside in the Montane Life Zone or the Subalpine Life Zone. Grab your snowshoes and your tent because here we set of on our adventure through the Rocky Mountains to my den. We reside in forests, wooded areas, swamps, mountains and deserts, only if it has enough small animals, trees and shrubs to hide behind. All bobcats must cover enough territory so it is able to consume enough food Our territory is small as 1.5 square miles the bobcat makes long scratches on wood with paws to cover territory. A bobcat marks its territory by spraying urine on trees or droppings, bobcats also scratch on trees which also leaves sent behind. When I am not hunting I am in sheltered spots like caves, hallow logs or thick shrubs some of us bobcats exist near cities and can settle anywhere. Bobcats usually reside in the Montane Life Zone. Bobcats use droppings to mark their territory.

Bobcats defend against anything that attacks us. We have sharp and excellent eyesight and our hearing helps me make sure what is around me. If we are threatened we make piercing noises. Our biggest threat are the humans (except Jacob here) the humans only kill us for our beautiful fur. We make piercing noises when they are threatened. our ears show black tuffs on the tip of our ears that act like antennas.

The bobcat has spotted markings, we stay together for several days mating, how we hunt at dawn or dusk, we are found mostly in the United States and we defend against anything that attacks us. “In peace and quiet, the bobcat is free to remain what is meant to be: truly a wild cat.” Our species is spread out through Canada, North America, and Mexico.
