Looking at CSDMS Model Naming scheme indicates some formal semantics. OWL export/dump is available  May need to be looked at whether any of its modeling decisions / ontological commitments need to be scrutinized. Highly potential to be (at least) a “foundational” component of a physical science ontology.

Radiation-Related Names atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__absorbed_energy_flux atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__absorptance atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__reflectance atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__reflected_energy_flux atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__transmittance atmosphere_clouds_radiation~incoming~shortwave__transmitted_energy_flux atmosphere_clouds_radiation~outgoing~longwave__emittance atmosphere_clouds_radiation~outgoing~longwave~downward__energy_flux atmosphere_clouds_radiation~outgoing~longwave~upward__energy_flux

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

What next? Remark: the existing string-based convention suffices for the current needs. But: there may be more use cases not covered by existing scheme.  Smarter / cross-repository scientific-model discovery?  More machine-processable way to communicate model description (reducing human interaction)?  Checking model consistency / uncovering hidden or missed assumption in the models being connected?
