Presentation transcript:

Cancer is a negative mutation. –It effects the regulation of cell division. –It is MITOSIS OUT OF CONTROL!

Cancerous cells do not have a regular life cycle… they do not perform cell functions – only perform mitosis. –If a skin cell becomes cancerous – creates daughter cells that are no longer skin cells.

As cancer cells reproduce, they form a tumour. –Tumour: mass of cells that grows and puts pressure on surrounding organs and damages nearby cells

‘Metastasis’ As tumour goes unnoticed… it will invade the circulatory system –Cells carried to other parts of the body where they will form new tumours Ex. Skin cancer has moved to the kidney = moved to the kidney = skin cancer with skin cancer with kidney metastasis. kidney metastasis.  spread of cancer

Benign vs. Malignant Freckles, moles, warts can be benign… they are harmless tumours Tumours that grow and invade are malignant

Causes Viruses –Leukemia, cervical cancer Radiation –Holes in o-zone layer reduce ability of atmosphere to filter our UV radiation Chemicals –Cigarettes –Chemicals that cause cancer: ‘carcinogen’

Fast Facts… (don’t write these down!) 40 chemicals in cigarettes are carcinogens This year, there will be 166,440 new cancer cases in Canada 73,800 people will die from cancer this year 20,000 of those will be due to lung cancer

Prevention Healthy lifestyle is best! –Don’t smoke –Eat healthy –Exercise –Be sun smart –See doctor if health changes

Treatment Cancer is hard to diagnose… no warning signs until it is too late. –Luckily, many types of cancer have high survival rates. ChemotherapyRadiationSurgery

Research a Treatment Select either chemotherapy, surgery or radiation. –You will research the following: What is the treatment? What does it consist of? How does this treatment work to remove cancerous cells? Is it invasive? When is this a good treatment option? What are the side effects of this treatment? Create a poster (normal paper size) to display your findings.
