Enhancing Patient Welfare: Interprofessional Health Education Through Simulation Interprofessional Suctioning Module: Endotracheal Suctioning

Required Equipment: -vacuum source -calibrated, adjustable regulator -collection bottle & connecting tubing -sterile disposable gloves -sterile suction catheter of appropriate caliber -sterile water/normal saline and sterile cup/bowl -protective equipment (goggles, mask, gown) -oxygen source with a calibrated metering device -manual resuscitation bag -stethoscope

Optional Equipment: -ECG monitor -pulse oximeter -sterile sputum trap for culture specimen -closed suction system -oxygen insufflation device

INDICATIONSPRECAUTIONSCONTRAINDICATIONS Increased pulmonary secretions: course breath sounds reduced/absent breath sounds spontaneous coughing ineffective cough increased peak inspiratory pressures/decreased tidal volumes worsening 02 sat/ABGs to obtain sputum sample to stimulate cough reflex hypoxic respiratory drive  O 2 saturation (> 4%) atelectasis mucosal fragility benign arrhythmia bronchospasm use aseptic technique  seconds severe  O 2 saturation (< 92%)  intracranial pressure (ICP) haemoptysis malignant arrhythmia hyperinflation post CABG and head injury
