By Yolanda Bleen

 Feeling very anxious, scared and overwhelmed. Hoping I can see this through.  New to the whole human service field. Class learning and actually performing the task, totally different.  The whole experience is important at this point.  I’m excited and not excited. Want to do it and don’t want to do it.  Grant writing

 Have become well acquainted with staff  More informed about the community  Have solely worked on health conference/health initiatives  Very focused on health concerns with people of color.  Attended one meeting. Haven’t been exposed to a lot.

 When I was the receptionist at Brandywine Counseling, they would give out incentives to the clients. All incentives were kept at my desk and I was responsible for taking payments also. There was a supervisor there who would get money or incentive gift cards out of the box at my desk for his own personal use. He claimed he would put it back when he got payed but I have no ideal if he did. To me this was the same thing as stealing plus it was kept at my desk and I did not want to be blamed for it so I told my supervisor. He was verbally reprimanded and life went on.

 I need direction until I’m comfortable on my own.  I have done everything I’ve been asked to do.  Had nothing to do when Ms. Debbie was away.  Want to know more about how funding is acquired.  Since I have no experience but school, I would definitely need direction.

 Reflecting back I ‘m sure I could have been more pleasant.  Could have definitely put forth more effort.  Could have been more positive about the situation

 Through all three intern placements, I have not exactly worked with individuals, families or otherwise.  I do however work with children, which is very trying to me.  I can easily talk to and relate to some teenagers but prefer the adult world/individual contact.

 There have been no cultural differences.  The African American community is in more need of help than I assumed.  I haven’t had any cultural challenges.  I have no problems working with anyone except a pedophile.

 I’ve worked on transferring resolutions onto the computer, writing letters to hopeful presenter for the men's health conference as well as letters to possible funders.

 This internship has taught me to make decisions for myself. I don’t like feeling like I’m being made to do something.  School work stresses me/especially a lot of it.  Laughter and exercise seem to help for the moment.

 The person I appreciate most in this internship is Deborah Wilson.  I regret that I didn’t start at MWUL from the beginning of this process.  I plan on still going to MWUL so that I can continue to learn.

 I honestly don’t know what my career goals are at this moment. At this point I don’t know if being an administrator is for me or what I want to do. Maybe five years or so from now, but not right now  My passion still is drug and alcohol counseling.  Find other employment to better my skills in this field.

 Well I can’t exactly tell the next intern that this has been a wonderful experience for me but I guess it’s what you make it and your attitude going into it. I would tell them to pick their own intern site, do not let others choose for you. Go somewhere that your passion is in so that you will benefit from it more.
