Report on Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) Jack B. Monpas-Huber, Ph.D. Director of Assessment & Student Information

Topics Data How much did Shoreline elementary students gain in reading ability last year? Gains / norms / “Shoreline yearly progress” How well does the Lexile predict performance on the MSP? Correlations among Lexile - ORF - MSP Diagnostic accuracy What are the best benchmarks? Fall 2010 Data What is the distribution of reading ability in our classrooms right now?

Actual SRI testing, Most schools seemed to prefer a “report card-compatible” testing calendar for SRI There is good growth info here, But the variability in testing times renders scores difficult to compare

Sample of students for current analysis Tested at least twice Pre- and post September and May/June Maximum score each time

How much did Shoreline elementary students gain in reading ability last year? Gains in average Lexile scores (in raw Lexile and SD units), by grade level, among students tested at least twice (fall and spring)

How much did Shoreline elementary students gain in reading ability last year? Gains in Lexile (percent meeting spring benchmark), by grade level, among students tested at least twice (fall and spring)

What does a strong correlation look like? District assessment MSP Perfect predictionNo relationship

How well does the Lexile predict performance on the MSP?

Using screeners as predictors: What’s the best cut score? We make two kinds of mistakes:

T / (T+F) = sensitivityT / (T+F) = specificity Want both to be at least.80 (by adjusting cut score), but they trade off Using screeners as predictors: What’s the best cut score?

Distribution of Fall 2009 Lexile scores - 3rd Grade SRI grade level proficiency 79.6% met MSP standard

What is the distribution of reading ability in classrooms right now?
