Renewable or non-renewable?

Discussion (Task 1) List different ways of generating electricity. In pairs Discuss how the resources can be used to produce electricity

Complete the worksheet(Task 1) Website worksheet

New Information for Task 1 In your books, explain the advantages and disadvantages of renewable/non renewable energy sources for generating electricity.

Generating Electricity Task You are going to research and produce a presentation on different ways in which electricity can be produced. Include the following: 1.What are renewable and non-renewable energy sources? Giving examples of each. 2.Give an example of two non-renewable energy resources and how they make electricity. 3.Give an example of two renewable energy resources and how they make electricity. 4.Give the advantages and disadvantages of using non- renewable energy sources to make electricity. 5.Give the advantages and disadvantages of using renewable energy sources to make electricity.

Non-renewable energy sources Coal, oil, gas and nuclear Advantages Disadvantages Cheap fuel costs Easy to use Generate a lot of energy Fuel will run out Pollution – CO 2 leads to global warming and SO 2 leads to acid rain

01/06/2016 Renewable energy sources Wind, tidal, solar etc Advantages Disadvantages Clean Easily accessible Won’t run out Energy is not very reliable Often depend on the weather – is it sunny???

Task 2: Review Lesson OutcomesHow I didTargets Task 2: Level 6 Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on task 2? Go back to your lesson outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column.

How do we make electromagnets? Coil of wire Pencil or nail (material) Power supply In reverse, How can we produce current? Coil of wire material magnet

Electromagnetic induction or dynamo effect Michael Faraday discovered that current can be produced using a magnet and coil of wire Around every magnet is a magnetic field and if a coil of wire is moved in a magnetic field voltage is produced and current will flow. Moving a magnet in a coil of wire or coil of wire in a magnetic field produces voltage and current will flow.

Factors affecting the direction of the current Direction of magnet - If you move the magnet in the opposite direction, voltage changes it’s direction, so current changes it’s direction Direction of movement of coil of wire Swap the poles of the magnet

Factors affecting the size of the current

1.A cyclist uses a dynamo to power their lights. What happens to the lights, when the bike stops moving? When they are riding along, what can they make the lights brighter? 2.Arrange the following actions in a correct order to show how a dynamo is used to operate a set of bicycle lights: Electrical energy turned into light energy in lamps Current flows in coil Move magnet in a coil Voltage induced in coil Questions (Task 3)

Task 3: Review Lesson OutcomesHow I didTargets Task 3: Level 7 Met? Partly met? Not met? How can I improve on task 3? Go back to your lesson outcome grid and fill out the ‘How I did’ and the ‘Targets’ column.
