Review: What You Need to Know EQs: *Can I distinguish between primary and secondary sources? *Can I rank research according to reliability??

Narrowing Down Your Topic Astronomy Solar System Asteroids Broad Subject More Narrow Focused Topic

What is a Reliable Source? A reliable source… O Is Trustworthy O Can be Proven

“Authenticated” “Not all information on the Internet has been authenticated” In other words, the information has not been checked for accuracy. Is this a good source to use?

Internet vs. Traditional Text O When might using the Internet be better than using a traditional text? O Topics that are contemporary (modern topics) – The Internet has more up-to-date information on current events. O Topics that are controversial – The Internet can give you a lot of different opinions on one topic. It can help you research a topic from different perspectives.

InternetBooks/Text Anyone can publish a Web page No one checks to see if the information is true or false There are millions of places to look for information Using the Internet is much quicker You can narrow down what you’re looking for more easily The Internet uses search engines Both provide sources of information Both are viewed by millions of people each day A book has to be published by a publishing company Editors check and verify the information Looking for a book can be more time consuming You have to visit a library The library uses the Dewey Decimal System

How do you verify that a website source is reliable? O 1. You can check cross-check the information and find it in more than one place. O 2. You can find the copyright and know when it was last updated. O 3. You know who created the site, and preferably, the author's credentials. O 4. Look at the domain. Is it a.org site or a.com site, with ads, for example? O.com and.org sites are the least reliable websites because they are paying lots of money to get their information out there. Look for.edu or.gov sites to guarantee reliability. O 5. Does the layout and format present the information in a professional manner? O 6. Is the site easy to navigate and user friendly? If not, it might not be the best place for gathering information
