NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement By Hollie Martin

When was it created?  NAFTA was created on January 1 st 1994  NAFTA stands for ‘North American Free Trade Agreement’  The governments of Canada, USA and Mexico form NAFTA  NAFTA ‘replaced’ the Canada-United States free trade agreement which was between Canada and the USA.  In 2007, this trade bloc was the largest in the world

Members  USA, Mexico and Canada (federal government)  Members are chosen from experts  Meetings take place in either the states of Canada

What is its purpose or goals?  The purpose/goals of NAFTA is that it will remove barriers that are preventing trade and investment among USA, Canada and Mexico.  NAFTA eliminated all non-tariff barriers to agricultural trade between the USA and Mexico.  Other tariffs, such as tariffs on qualifying goods, were eliminated and some were phased out for long periods of time (5-15 years). Because of this the orderly adjustment were able to free trade with Mexico.  Improve working conditions in North America

What does this organization do?  NAFTA governs the entire spectrum of North American trade   NAFTA provides better tariff treatment (tariffs weren’t as strict, more trading) for certain products traded between the USA, Canada and Mexico.  Special treatment means either reduced or eliminated tariff rates, depending on the product.

How does it promote globalization and develop interdependence?  NAFTA gave a push towards globalization where nations share resources where barriers to trade are eliminated. NAFTA has helped Canada get involved with the trade industry. NAFTA helped eliminate tariffs between the USA, Canada and Mexico. NAFTA increased Mexico’s exports and created more factory jobs. Mexico’s economy has grown since joining NAFTA.

What people think of NAFTA Positive  ‘NAFTA recognizes the reality of today's economy - globalization and technology. Our future is not in competing at the low-level wage job; it is in creating high-wage, new technology jobs based on our skills and our productivity.’ - John F. Kerry Negative  “Whereas in 1989, 87 % of the unemployed in Canada qualified for UI benefits, (as compared to 52 % in the U.S.) by 2001, only 39 % of jobless Canadians could qualify for coverage.” - Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
