The Importance of Formative Assessment First module provides an introduction to formative assessment, its importance and role in NC’s 21 st Century Balanced Assessment system. First module provides an introduction to formative assessment, its importance and role in NC’s 21 st Century Balanced Assessment system.

The Importance of Formative Assessment After the training, participants will be able to: 1. Explain the purpose of formative assessment and why it is defined as a process 2. Distinguish between formative assessment and benchmark/summative assessment 3. Discuss how formative assessment is used in their classroom and how they plan to use formative assessment in the future.

The Importance of Formative Assessment Five Assessment Myths and Their Consequences by Dr. Rick Stiggins Five Assessment Myths and Their Consequences by Dr. Rick Stiggins

The Importance of Formative Assessment What is Formative Assessment? Formative assessment is ongoing assessment used minute by minute in order for teachers and students to actively determine the next instructional and learning steps to achieve specified learning targets. Formative assessment is ongoing assessment used minute by minute in order for teachers and students to actively determine the next instructional and learning steps to achieve specified learning targets.

The Importance of Formative Assessment What Are Benchmark Assessments? Benchmark assessments are measures given periodically throughout the instructional unit. They determine how much learning has taken place up to a particular point in time and track progress toward meeting curriculum goals. Teachers give benchmark assessments (e.g. quizzes) prior to a classroom summative assessment (e.g. end of chapter test) to help students determine their progress for learning. The Importance of Formative Assessment What Are Summative Assessments? What Are Summative Assessments? Summative assessments are measures given at the end of the instructional unit to measure student achievement. They provide evidence of student competence or program effectiveness. On the state level, summative assessments are given to measure cumulative achievement over a long period of time such as a semester or a year.

The Importance of Formative Assessment NC’s new teacher assessment method focuses on the teacher’s use of all three types of assessment—formative, benchmark, and summative. The Importance of Formative Assessment Formative Assessment and Student Achievement Formative assessment is a process used by both teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of the intended instructional outcomes (CCSSO FAST SCASS, 2006)

The Importance of Formative Assessment Formative assessment occurs multiple times during a lesson. Formative assessment occurs multiple times during a lesson. Students should be given frequent opportunities to reflect on the lesson’s content. Students should be given frequent opportunities to reflect on the lesson’s content. Significant gains in student improvement are shown when formative assessment is used. Significant gains in student improvement are shown when formative assessment is used.

The Importance of Formative Assessment Formative Assessment Model Students reflect on: 1. Where am I going? 2. Where am I now? 3. How do I close the gap?

The Importance of Formative Assessment “Where am I going?” Define clear learning targets—written in student-friendly language Define clear learning targets—written in student-friendly language Provide clear criteria for success—students must be able to recognize and describe the quality of work that is expected. The Importance of Formative Assessment “Where am I now?” Students and teachers collect evidence of learning to determine where the students are in relation to the intended learning outcomes. Students and teachers collect evidence of learning to determine where the students are in relation to the intended learning outcomes. Teachers and students document evidence of learning to record learning as it happens. Teachers communicate this progress to students and their parents. The Importance of Formative Assessment “How do I close the gap?” Provide descriptive feedback—communicate enough information for the students to determine what they need to do to reach the learning target and close gaps. Student ownership—Students must use the descriptive feedback to move their learning toward the intended target. The Importance of Formative Assessment Formative assessment is not solely designed and directed by the teacher. Students must take ownership of their learning. Teachers should provide opportunities for students to share their work with each other, analyze each other’s work, and provide feedback to each other.
