Welcome to City!

Who studies at City? Around 13,000 students from all over the world  1500 on Engineering and Technology related subjects  350 on Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics (MEA) subjects Gender of students: 22% Female and 78% Male Status of students: 60% UK, 11% EU and 28% Overseas All ages – majority of undergraduates aged All cultural backgrounds and walks of life

What is an Engineer? someone who fixes your car or boiler? someone who ‘does engineering’ ? an ‘applied scientist’? The Engineering Council says: “engineering is the practice of creating and sustaining services, systems, devices, machines, structures, processes and products to improve the quality of life; getting things done more effectively and efficiently”

What is an Engineer? Almost everything around you is there because of an engineer  If an engineer didn’t design it, then an engineer made it fit-for-purpose! Engineers make things work  We are more interested in ‘how it works’ than ‘why is it so’  We exploit scientific knowledge to achieve goals  We make decisions based on incomplete information

Interpretation of limited, incorrect or contradictory information Trials Reverse Engineering and product improvement Risk Assessment Management Measurement and analysis of system behaviour Teaching Market analysis Changing the world! Development and application of mathematical models Technology Development Design Research Some examples of the roles of an Engineer

Why study Engineering at City? The People  Student satisfaction > 90% for quality of staff  Over 50% of MEA staff with industry background The Facilities  Extensive opportunities for practical work  Specialist aeronautical and automotive laboratories The Standards  City is focussed upon excellence  employability

What will I learn at City? Specialist topics!  CATIA  Renewable Energy  Chassis Engineering  Structured Design Process  Combustion & Fuels  Airworthiness  Wing Aerodynamics  Flight Dynamics  Aeroelasticity  CFD & FEA  Gas Turbine Engineering  Astronautics  Languages!

What degree will I attain? BEng or MEng in  Aeronautical Engineering  Air Transport Engineering Accredited by  Royal Aeronautical Society  Automotive and Motor Sport Engineering  Energy Engineering  Mechanical Engineering  Institution of Mechanical Engineers

What do the Professions think about City? May 2010 accreditation of MEng and BEng programmes commended  Mix of international and home students  High levels of industrial content and flavour  New flight test course for Part 2 Aeronautical/ATE July 2010 IMechE Formula Student event  City entered Class 1A Low Carbon category  City’s Sean Canty, was lead quote in the IMechE press release

Air Transport Group Design Project – A320 Simulator enhancement

Flight Test Course

How will I achieve all this? Lectures  Supported by on-line materials (presentations, activities) Tutorials  Smaller groups; question and answer Practical work  Laboratory, Workshop, Drawing Office, CAD and other CEM Project work  Individual  Group e.g. EGPR, Formula Student, Dev Tech, UAV Design

What about Placement Opportunities? Available after Part 2 or Part 3 Placements in the last two years include  Airbus  British Airways Engineering  Agusta Westland  Tubelines  Jaguar  TOTAL Oil

Will I get a job afterwards? Recent Graduates now work throughout the profession including  Rolls Royce (Aero Engines)  BAE Systems  Airbus  Lotus  Jaguar  … and lots of smaller engineering consultancy companies!

What is the Energy and Transport Research Centre? Highly active in both Mechanical and Aeronautical  Three industry-sponsored chairs Past & present research sponsors include  Yamaha, Airbus, Toyota, Westland, Shell, EADS, DSTL, Delphi, Lotus, QinetiQ Continuous impact on our programmes  Part 3, Part 4 and MSc students involved in these research activities Companies also provide student project ideas

As a graduate, I will have gained… a solid grounding in Engineering from staff who have been there; a focus on current global challenges such as sustainable transport and energy supply.

So, how do I get here? A Levels: UCAS 340 (BEng) or 360 (MEng) – including AS  Maths essential at B/A grade (BEng/MEng); Physics desirable IB: 30 (BEng) or 32 (MEng) Maths 6 at higher level Also equivalent entry tariff with A-level Maths Foundation year also available  MEA’s top graduate in 2010 came through the Foundation route and finished with an 83% 1 st class honours in MEng Automotive
