I'm feeling worse than yesterday. You don't know what I'm going through. I've got a strange, rare case of flu. "My body aches, my throat is sore. I'm sure I'm knocking on death's door. You can't send me to school-achoo!- 'Cause everyone could get it, too. "Besides, the kids despise me there. They always tease and always stare. And all the teachers know my name. When something's wrong, it's me they blame.“ "You faked a headache yesterday. Don't pull that stuff on me today. Stop acting like a silly fool- The principal cannot skip school!" Don't pull that stuff on me today. Stop acting like a silly fool- The principal cannot skip school!" The Key Devices Imagery Stanza 1: Mum throwing her naked son on the bus. Stanza 2: The son being really ill. Stanza 3: His aching body, him knocking on Death's door, and him sneezing Stanza 4: The kids staring at him and teachers ‘pointing’, blaming him. Stanza 6: Him pretending to have a headache.

The Key Devices Tone The mood or atmosphere created by the poem. The mood of this poem is humorous or funny because we don’t expect the Principal to be the person wanting to skip school. So for most of the poem we think it is a child talking to his mother. Copy the information in the Blue Box into your Anthology booklet. "Get out of bed, you silly fool! Get up right now, it's time for school. If you don't dress without a fuss, I'll throw you naked on the bus!“ "Oh, Mom, don't make me go today. Stop acting like a silly fool- The principal cannot skip school!" Get Out of Bed! by Diane Z. Shore

Meaning: This is a humorous (funny) poem in which a son pretends to be sick in an attempt to persuade his mother to let him have the day off school. It would appear that he is being bullied at school by both students and teachers but the poem has a funny ‘twist’ at the end as we learn that the son is in fact the school’s Principal. Get Out of Bed! by Diane Z. Shore "Get out of bed, you silly fool! Get up right now, it's time for school. If you don't dress without a fuss, I'll throw you naked on the bus!“ "Oh, Mom, don't make me go today.
