Xin Liu 2 Highlights prerequisites: ECS110 and Statistics Class: TR 1:40-3:00PM, 2016 Haring ; Discussion: F, 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.; 2016 Haring

Xin Liu 3 Highlights Textbook –J. Kurose and K. Ross, Computer Networking: A Top- down approach featuring the Internet, Addison Wesley, 5 th edition.Computer Networking: A Top- down approach featuring the Internet –4 th edition is also ok. TA: Yichuan Wang, TA office hour: Wedn PM, 55 Kemper Hall Instructor office hour: F 1-2PM 3013 EII or by appointment –If needed, the office hour will be extended to 3pm.

Xin Liu 4 Grading Policy Grading –Projects 25% (2 Android-based projects) –Midterm 20% (one mid-term, Nov. 3) –Homework 20% (4 sets) –Final 35% All homework and projects will be submitted online.

Xin Liu 5 All homework and projects require individual efforts. Discussions are allowed, no copying allowed. Late policy –Full credit if on time –50% if within 24 hours –25% if within 48 hours –0 after 48 hours Regrading Policy –One week regrading period after grades returned to students Incomplete will not be granted –Unless proved emergency with filled emergency form Academic Integrity –Homework –Projects

Xin Liu 6 Please include “ECS 152A” in your subject line, to me and to the TA. In most cases, 24-hour response. If your requests not responded, let me know.

Xin Liu 7 etiquettes UCD Etiquette  R U handing back midterms Th?  Pls. reply asap.

Xin Liu 8 Hi Gary, I was wondering if you are going to be handing back the midterm this week? Thanks, Shareen  It is also best to address your to one person, possibly cc to others.

Xin Liu 9 Good Grade Guideline Protocol stacks are rational –Understand, not memorize Active classroom participation Do your own homework and projects –Help you understand –Help you do well in exams Follow the textbook and notes Extra material covered in lectures

Xin Liu 10 H1N1 H1N1 is expected to hit about 20% of us this Fall Seasonal flu vaccine is available and strongly recommended this year. H1N1 vaccine will be available early to mid October. H1N1 is spread more though coughing than through touch. I may ask obviously sick students to leave as a simple courtesy to others. If I am sick, I will find replacement/send announcement.

Xin Liu 11 Road Map Introduction –Communications model and networking –Protocols and architecture –Packet-switched networks Application Layer –Principles –Web –File transfer – –DNS –Peer-to-peer

Xin Liu 12 Road Map Transport Layer –Introduction and principles –UDP (User Datagram Protocol) –TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) –Reliable data transfer and TCP –Congestion control and TCP Network Layer –Introduction –Inside a router –The Internet Protocol (IP) –Routing algorithms –IP Routing –Broadcast and multicast

Xin Liu 13 Road Map The Link Layer and Local Area Networks –Introduction and services –Error Detection and Correction –Multiple Access –Link-layer Addressing –Ethernet –Link Layer Switching

Xin Liu 14 Comments? Questions always welcome in class/office hours. I am constantly looking for ways to make this class better, more useful, more fun All comments/suggestions welcome. Anonymous if you like. Questions?

Xin Liu 15 Walkout and Budget Budget and its consequence –Fee increase, enrollment decrease, crowded classes, poor infrastructure and maintenance –Lose good people –Lose competitiveness –Privatization of public universities The goal of the university and faculty members –Education, research, service What can we do together? Furlough days

Xin Liu 16 Personal Finance Responsible Savvy Credit card Debit card Saving Investment

Xin Liu 17 A few other notes Internship opportunity – –Contact John Bruvo Undergraduate research opportunities –Android –Self motivated –Long term commitment ECS 152B
