Data Capture By Chris McBride

What is Data Capture ? There are a large variety of sources from which data can be acquired and and many devices that can be used to capture data. Data capture is the process of acquiring data from an outside source.

How Can You Capture Data? Key-to-disk systems. Key-to-disk systems. –Each operator inputs their data, the data is then verified by a second operator. Scanners and OCR. Scanners and OCR. –Documents are scanned and shown on the screen. Voice data entry. Voice data entry. –User speaks, computer types! Keyboard data entry. Keyboard data entry. –The most common type of data entry

More Methods of Capture Data. Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR –MICR is mainly used by banks to read cheques. Mouse, joystick, light pen & touch screen. Mouse, joystick, light pen & touch screen. All of these are commonly used input devices that are used for a large variety of tasks.

Smart cards Smart cards –Smart cards are like magnetic strip cards but contain a small microprocessor Magnetic Stripes Magnetic Stripes –Cards such as loyalty cards and debit cards all use magnetic strips.

Barcodes What do the numbers on a barcode mean? First 2 or 3 indicate which country the item is from The next five indicate the manufacturers code The last 5 digits represent the product code and size, but not the price
