Language Arts 2/4/14

Reminders Last day to reassess for Grammar test is Wednesday 2/5. Remember – you must check in prior to the day you will reassess, have your original test, and complete a reassessment study guide. Your vocab quiz this week will be on Thursday due to the field trip on Friday.

Opening Prepositional Phrase Challenge... Did you find the 96 prepositional phrases – or did you find more???

Opening Clause: a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. There are two kinds of clauses: independent and dependent. Ex. Some students work in the food pantry because they care about helping hungry people.

Opening Clause: a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. There are two kinds of clauses: independent and dependent. Ex. Some students work in the food pantry because they care about helping hungry people.

Opening An independent clause expresses a complete thought and cant stand alone as sentence. Ex. Some students work in the food pantry.

Opening A dependent clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses depend on being connected to an independent clause to make sense. In other words – it is a fragment.

Opening Most dependent clauses are introduced by conjunctions (because, when, if, while, and that) or a relative pronoun (who, whose, which, that). Ex. Some students work in the food pantry because they care about helping hungry people.

Opening A dependent clause can be joined to an independent clause to add to the complete thought that the independent clause expresses.

Opening WriteSource pg Although digital cameras take excellent pictures, they still do not see as well as the human eye. 2.The eye sends nerve signals through the optic nerve to the brain, which interprets the signals as sight. 3.The cornea, pupil, lens, and retina are the key parts of the eye. 4.The cornea is a clear membrane that covers the front of the eye. 5.The retina, which focuses light, is located in the back of the eye and is filled with rods and cones. 6.Cones, which are not functional in every person, make it possible to see in color.

Opening WriteSource pg Because rods sense light in black, white, and gray, they allow people to see in low light. 8.A person can also see in low light because the pupil enlarges it. 9.When the light is bright, the pupil contracts. 10. Muscles stretch or compress the lens in each eye so that a person can see near or far. 11.The lenses of a person who has cataracts are not clear. 12.If someone’s eye shape isn’t quite right, he or she will have trouble seeing clearly. 13.Although surgery can solve many vision problems, glasses or contact lenses are still the simplest remedy.

Work Time Complete the Independent and Dependent Clause worksheet (both sides).

Closing Review work sheet – and turn in for a homework grade! What is a clause? What is the difference between an independent and a dependent clause?
