TO THE POINT OF SACRIFICE June 13, 2010 Providence Marc Hopkins
GIVING To put into the possession of another for their use. To transfer from one’s authority or custody. –Not always the strongest natural human trait. Giving can be done to the extent of sacrifice. –Sacrifice-to suffer loss of, give up, renounce…
SACRIFICE Sacrifice can involve giving, but giving doesn’t necessarily involve sacrifice. Giving to the point of sacrifice exhibits: –Priority –Importance Surrendering one’s own interest for the benefit of a more important cause.
GOD IS THE PROVIDER God never needs-He provides. But remember: What God demanded before the new covenant. –Giving to the point of sacrifice for Israel. Demands of the feasts and sacrifices –The amount of their giving –The quality of their giving Their tithing and first-born Why did God require anything of Man?
GIVING TO THE EXTENT OF SACRIFCE This extensive giving promotes the true importance of God. –It constantly reminded them of God’s giving to them. –It established: God’s greatness The priority and importance of serving God first –Great effort and preparation Sacrifice is for man’s benefit. –Teaches us respect and reverence for God –Restores us to an acceptable state
THE ISRAELITES’ ROLE Israelites were not to approach God empty- handed. (Deut. 16:16) –Provision was made for the poor. Not amount in quantity, but amount in sacrifice Israelites were to make great preparation. –Cleansed physically and spiritually Still enforcing the importance at hand. –Society is changing in this area.
OUR INDIVIDUAL ROLE Still one of giving to point of sacrifice. –Priority “1” or we are not worthy (Matt. 10:37) Giving of our means to the point of sacrifice Giving of our time/work to the point of sacrifice We may be giving, but are we sacrificing? –God demands sacrifice, not left-overs. God knows our heart. –The world can know by our sacrifice.
OUR BODIES A SACRIFICE Our bodies are to be offered as a sacrifice. –Romans 12:1 Living- God’s word in action Holy- Set apart from the world Acceptable to God Voluntarily –Involuntary giving is a forced payment. »Shows nothing but obligation
REASONS FOR OUR SACRIFICE Because of the mercies of God –Existence- Our life –Provision- In life –Love- Giving of his own Son. For our eternal existence. –He desired us to be with Him forever. –John 3:16 It is reasonable service
TODAY We have gathered in the presence of God. –What have we brought in sacrifice? Did we come empty-handed? Did we prepare? –Were our hearts pure and holy? Cleansed physically and spiritually? –Or full of worldly baggage and filth? Today, cleanse your heart.
