Welcome Back! Same seats as yesterday Turn in your signed syllabus (due Friday) Get out some paper to take notes Start thinking about the QOD – What qualifies as science?
First… Name the seven characteristics of life!
Bell Work Let’s discuss… “Name three times you would ‘do science’ in your daily life.”
What qualifies as Science?
Science is… A method of solving a problem or investigating a phenomenon.
Sci Method Review Bart Simpson believes that mice exposed to microwaves will become extra strong. He decides to perform this experiment by placing 10 mice in a microwave for 10 seconds. He compared these 10 mice to another 10 mice that had not been exposed. His test consisted of a heavy block of wood that blocked the mouse food. He found that 8 out of 10 of the microwaved mice were able to push the block away. 7 out of 10 of the non-microwaved mice were able to do the same.
Building your Lab Report Question: Why do the experiment?
Building your Lab Report Hypothesis: Educated prediction about the outcome; “If ___, then ___, because ___.” Example: If I put fresh batteries in the remote then it will work because batteries must be replaced regularly.
Building your Lab Report Procedure: What to do in five sentences or less.
Building your Lab Report Independent Variable: What am I testing? (If this…) Dependent Variable: What will happen b/c of change? OR What will I measure? (Then this…)
Building your Lab Report Control: How will I know the IV really caused the change? Constant: What will I keep the same the whole time?
Building your Lab Report Results: What happened? Quantitative (Numbers) Data: measurements, counts, etc. Qualitative (Qualities) Data: color, texture, etc.
Building your Lab Report Conclusion: Evaluate hypothesis. Suggest what to do next.
Let’s Try it Out Thumb Wrestling Lab Warning: Pre-test tomorrow!
Homework On a separate sheet of paper to turn in, fill out a lab report for the Beriberi experiment as if you were Dr. Eijkman. Due tomorrow at the beginning of the block.
