Atoms 500 Periodic Table Trends in The PT Compounds Mixtures

Define “atom.”

“Atom” can be defined 3 ways… 1. the simplest unit of an element that still has the properties of the element 2. un-cuttable and indivisible 3. the building blocks of all matter.

What are the names, locations and charges of the 3 subatomic particles?

NameChargeLocation Proton+Nucleus NeutronNo chargeNucleus Electron- Outside nucleus or shells or cloud

What element has 10 protons in its nucleus?

Neon

How many protons, neutrons and electrons does Carbon-12 have?

An atom of Carbon-12 would have 6 protons, 6 electrons and 6 neutrons.

Draw a Bohr model for a neutral atom of Calcium.

Elements in the same column of the periodic table are in the same ________. Elements in the same row of the periodic table are in the same ________.

Elements in the same column of the periodic table are in the same group. Elements in the same row of the periodic table are in the same period.

Locate the metals, nonmetals and metalloids on a periodic table.

The metals are located to the left of the staircase. The nonmetals are located to the right of the staircase. The metalloids (B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te) are located right on the staircase.

What are characteristics of metals, nonmetals and metalloids? Name at least 4 for each.

Metals: most metals are malleable, ductile, good conductors of heat and electricity, shiny, react with oxygen and acids. Nonmetals: brittle, not good conductors of heat or electricity, gasses at room temperature, and are dull with no luster. Metalloids: can be shiny or dull, can be a little ductile or malleable, and are somewhat ok conductors.

Why do elements in the same group (family) behave the same way?

Elements in the same group have the same number of valance electrons. This makes them behave the same way.

This metal is the most reactive in its period. It has 55 protons in its nucleus.

Cesium

True/False…correct the statement if false. Elements on the Periodic Table are arranged in order of increasing density.

False, elements on the Periodic Table are arranged in order of increasing atomic number.

Which group of elements in the Periodic Table is unreactive?

The noble gasses

Which group of metals is the most reactive?

The Alkali metals

Which group of nonmetals is most reactive?

The Halogens

As you move across a period in the Periodic table, the number of energy shells (levels) _________. A. Increases B. Decreases C. Stays the same

C. Stays the same

What is the difference between an element and a compound?

An element is only one type of pure substance. A compound is made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined to create a new substance.

A compound has a _____________ ratio of components.

A compound has a definite ratio of components.

In the below picture, how many compounds are there? How many elements?

There are two different compounds shown and there are two different elements.

Write a chemical formula for the below picture. Use the format of BW for your formulas. A B

A= BW 2 B= B 4 W 2

How is a compound formed? How is it separated?

A compound is formed through a chemical reaction. It is separated by a chemical reaction as well.

If you dissolve salt into water, which is the solute and which is the solvent?

The salt would be the solute, the water would be the solvent.

True or False. Correct if false. Creating a solution is an example of a chemical change.

False. Creating a solution is an example of a physical change. It is easily undone, the properties do not change etc.

True or False. Correct if false. Gases can not be dissolved into liquids.

False. Gases can be dissolved into liquids. Ever drink a bottle of soda???

Which of the below pictures show a picture of a mixture? A or B

Picture A shows a picture of a mixture. You can tell because there are different compounds floating around. Picture B has all the same type of dots (elements) in it.

A solution that contains a large amount of solute is best described as _________. A. Dilute B. Weak C. Concentrated

C. Concentrated
