Chapter 22 America Becomes an Imperial Power Section 1 Imperialism in the Pacific

Manifest Destiny – push to Pacific coast, once gained began to look overseas for wealth. Imperialism – policy by which stronger nations extend their economic,political, or military control over weaker nations.

Supporters of Imperialism Increase nation’s financial prosperity. strengthen militarily spread democratic ideas. Superiority of the Western culture. Known as “White Man’s Burden”

ALASKA Mistake?

William Seward – former Secretary of State. Purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million. Annexed in th state in cents an acre! “Sewards Icebox” “Sewards Folly”. Why called these? Ended up having timber, minerals and oil
