August 30, 2012 Modeling Solar, Storage and Inverter based resources John Adams Resource Integration Planning Working Group

August 30, 2012 Objective To model storage, solar and inverter based resources into ERCOT New Solar and battery projects have necessitated including modeling requirements for these new resources

August 30, 2012 Inverter based technologies – FIS requirements PSS/E dynamic model including the inverter PSCAD or MATLAB Simulink model for the inverter Fault characteristics of the inverter for short circuit studies Reactive capability of the inverter (provide 95% of reactive requirement within 0.5 seconds for a voltage setpoint change from 100% to 90% nominal)

August 30, 2012 Storage technologies(Battery and Hydro storage) Registration data  Maximum MW delivery capability  Maximum MW charge and discharge rate  Maximum MWh energy capacity  Round trip energy efficiency  Transition time from Charge to Discharge and Discharge to Charge Telemetry data  Minimum allowable state of charge  Current available power capability (MW)  Current maximum charge and discharge rate capability (MW)  Current available energy availability (MWh)  Maximum rate of power delivery or charging change (dP/dT)  Charging, On_Reg_Charging, On_NS_Charging  Transition time from Current state (Charging or Discharging) to other state (Discharging or Charging)

August 30, 2012 Photovoltaic technologies Fixed position solar farms (for solar forecasts)  Latitude  Longitude  Alignment of solar panels  Placement angle off horizontal Solar farms over 100 MW shall supply Total Sky Imager and Transfer Sky Images (or equivalent) to ERCOT once every 30 seconds to facilitate short term cloud impact on energy production Solar farms (over 20 MW) shall provide the following 30 sec met data  Air temperature  Back of panel temperature  Wind speed  Wind direction  Global horizontal irradiance  Telemetry data for concentrated PV installations  Direct normal irradiance
