Presentation transcript:

Preparing for your interview Learn about how to be successful in a real interview situation.- skills you will use for the rest of your life!

Aim: you will learn about how to fill in an application form to get a positive result from it By the end of this session you... WILL have shown me you can complete an accurate, realistic application form for a job or course May have started a letter of application You also need to consider doing the following in your own time; Research the job: complete your CV

Two teams... Pick a leader for each team and a scorer.

Why do employers and colleges use application forms?

They can get the information that they want quickly They treat everyone equally They are an easy way for applicants to record information

Application form What happens if you make a mistake? If you wrote in ink first, it stays there and looks messy! What does THAT say about you?

Here is an example of a completed form for you to evaluate. How many mistakes? What are they? What impression do they create?.

Name: Mr/Miss Form: Jane Smith Career/Training Course/College Course interest I want to be an enjiner because you earn alot of money and don’t have to work too many hours. My dad was one so I now all about it. Why are you interested in this type of career/training/course? Don’t know Address: 3 green row Post Code: Secondary Schools attended hollins Subjects studies to GCSE level English Maths Work Experience/Part-time jobs. Please give job, employer and length of time in that job I worked at The Old Brown Cow washing up but I was sacked after two days Hobbies and interests None Date 10th March

Keep the application form tidy Do not… put it in a pocket Let it get wet Use different colours of ink to fill it in Doodle on it!! Do keep real ones in a plastic wallet or envelope, flat, clean and tidy.

Use a pencil first- then ink Fill in the form lightly in pencil so you can rub out mistakes Don’t leave it filled in in pencil- write it up in ink Pencil isn’t legally binding! Apply for a job or course you could do at 16 when you leave.

Fill it in using pencil as if you were applying for a real job or training or college course. No answer- use N/A- “Not applicable.” Copy it up in ink. Delete pencil marks. Don’t fill in the back!

Super-student? Plan out your letter of application NB get it checked before the interview by someone who knows about these things There are models and frameworks available to help you on the school webpage.

Finished? Find someone else who has finished. Peer assess his/her form. Any recommendations? Hand in form to teacher to post to YOUR interviewer!

What happens... remember? You get an interview with a real interviewer on your own and you do all the preparation yourself!

What happens 7 th June: you will be given an interview time, place and interviewer, plus company details of the interviewer where appropriate, in a letter to your parents/carers You are expected to organise getting there. You will need to show the appointment letter to your family at home AND to your teacher when you need to leave the lesson.

Plenary Tell me one new thing you have learned today. Why is it important to fill in an application form carefully? How will today’s session help you move on?
