How is it determined?  Actus Reus -> Guilty Act -> Have actually committed the crime  Mens Rea -> Guilty Mind -> sufficiently intended to commit the crime  Jury based on evidence and arguments makes a decision  Judge makes a verdict based on decision

Factors of Criminal Behaviour  Psychological, social, economical, political, self interest and genetic.  Psychological -> influence behaviour and ability to control themselves Mental illness and not being able to recognise emotions 57% woman 39% males, mental illness in prisons.  Economical -> Very common 33% male 50% female on government payments as income More likely to commit crimes such as robbery and larceny.

Situational + Social Prevention  Situational -> Making crimes harder to commit, higher risk = lower gain techniques; CCTV, Bar Alarms and non-alcohol zones simple, relatively cheap, makes society safer, may not stop more dangerous crimes  Social -> Addressing underlying social factors influencing crime. techniques; School funding, TAFE courses, parenting workshops these methods create opportunities, sense of worth, long term, avoid young/early contact with enforcement agencies
