SIOUX How did the homeland affect their way of life?? They Hunted & fished Very little farming Lots of buffalo herds on the plains Buffalo became main food resource Nomadic lives, follow source of food Made tepees of buffalo hide

SIOUX Why is storytelling important?? Very important way of communication Stories such as “Forgotten Ear of Corn” – teaches not to waste “Peace Pipe” –when peace is achieved they need to seal the agreement, each smoke from pipe

SIOUX What was special about the culture of this group? Houses (tepees) belonged to the women of the tribe & they transported it. Dependent on the buffalo herds to live USED ALL the buffalo Tepees easy to move, relocate

SIOUX How did trade affect the Native American group discussed in the book Traded furs with French in 17 th century. Trade with neighbor tribes influenced way of life Traded buffalo furs and meat for corn

SIOUX Give at least 3 examples of how this group adapted to their environment… Tepees made of posts & buffalo hide Set up & take down in under an hour Allows for the tribe to move quickly – follow herds WHEN they get the horse from Europeans, it will increase control over Mid-West
