Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below. The media not only transmit information and culture, they also decide what information is important. In that way, they help to shape culture and values. Assignment: Do newspapers, magazines, television, radio, movies, the Internet, and other media determine what is important to most people?

Things to consider: -What do you notice first? Anything? -highlight or underline what the prompt is asking you to do and important aspects -Use what you know!! -Background information -Pre-writing—Must have some type of plan!! -Organization -Readdress the prompt! Then address your thesis (don’t forget the attention getter or the use of a creative element)

There are many elements that form a society: survival necessities such as food and shelter, communities, common beliefs, culture, education, and…TV? Current society is dominated by media that arrives in all forms, from laptops, Ipods, TVs and cell phones. Just by taking a look around one can see the effects media has on society but how reliable is the information one receives through a twitter update, the local news or the advertisement for a certain product?

ACT Essay Question: In this country, most people see and hear advertising for many different products every day. Some people think advertising is useful because it provides important information about many different products. Other people think advertising is not useful because it tries to persuade people to buy products they do not really need. In your opinion, does advertising serve a useful purpose in our society?
