3.4 The Race for Empires

Early French Settlements  Jacques Cartier (1534) North coast of N. America o Established French Florida  French Huguenots (driven out by Spanish)  French Colonies  Religious wars delay colonization of America  Once wars were over, they colonized Eastern Canada (Cartier & Champlain)  Where: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, Northern New England, St. Lawrence River, etc)

 Fur trade was huge o All along the Great Lakes region o Traded with Indians for fur o Montreal became the center of the fur industry Expansion of the French Empire o Louis Jolliet & Jacques Marquette (1673)  Mississippi river to Arkansas (turned back-didn’t want to anger the Spanish) o Rene-Robert de La Salle (1682)  Mississippi river to the Gulf of Mexico  Named region Louisiana (in honor of King Louis XIV) o Growth in New France  Growth very slow (Detroit, St. Louis, New Orleans, along the Great Lakes and Mississippi river

Fur Trade

o French became allies with Algonquian & Huron Indians ( very respectful to indians) o Bitter enemies of the Iroquois New Netherlands and New Sweden (trade with the Indians attracted European nations )  Dutch (Henry Hudson) o Claimed lands between Delaware and Connecticut rivers (New Netherlands (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Delaware) o 1624 Dutch West India Company (traded in Africa, Caribbean and the Americas)  Failed to attract many Dutch to the New Netherlands  Eventually allowed other Europeans settle in New Netherlands also practiced religious toleration
