European Exploration During the late 1400’s to early 1600’s, Spain, England, and France all tried to find a western sea passage that led to Asia. Instead they found a whole “new world” that had much to offer each country.

What We’ll Learn We’ll learn who sponsored (provided money and supplies) the explorers’ journeys. Some of the motivations for sailing. The accomplishments (successes) in exploration of the New World.

Christopher Columbus Sponsors: the king and queen of Spain Motivations: to find a western sea route to Asia, to find riches, and claim land for Spain Accomplishments: discovered New World exploring Santo Domingo and Venezuela for others to explore

Juan Ponce de Leon Sponsors: King and Queen of Spain Motivations: to claim new land for Spain, find riches, and the Fountain of Youth Accomplishments: founded St. Augustine, FL and first governor of Puerto Rico

Jacques Cartier Sponsor: King of France Motivations: to claim new land for France and find western sea route to Asia Accomplishments: named St. Lawrence River, Quebec, and Montreal, and started a rich fur trade

Christopher Newport Sponsors: King of England and the VA Company Motivations: claim new land for England, find riches, and find a western sea route to Asia Accomplishments: started 1 st permanent English settlement (Jamestown) and sailed to the Fall Line near present-day Richmond

SOL Review Each explorer wanted to find a western sea route to Asia to find riches and spices. Each explorer wanted to claim new land for their countries. Columbus is credited with discovering the New World (although he never knew it). Ponce de Leon founded the oldest city in America-St. Augustine, FL. Jamestown, VA is the first permanent English settlement in the New World founded by Christopher Newport. Cartier founded the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, and Montreal. Newport sailed to the Fall Line near present-day Richmond and named Jamestown and the James River after King James I of England.

SOL Classroom Quiz Who sailed to the Fall Line in VA? Who searched for the Fountain of Youth? Who found a whole “new world” in North America? Who named the St. Lawrence River, Montreal, and Quebec? Who named the James River and Jamestown after King James I of England? Who landed in Santo Domingo and Venezuela? Who found St. Augustine, FL? Who began a rich fur trade for France?
