How to be successful in Mrs. Bartlett’s class

Come to class prepared –Have all your materials Flash drive Pen (dark blue/black)/pencil, marking pen (red) 1 or 1 ½ inch binder 1 package page protectors 5 dividers/tabs Notebook paper Homework/interview/research, etc.

Act responsibly! –Get to class on time! –Be respectful to others. –Put materials back after using them. –Don’t whine. Instead, ask questions if you don’t understand! –Meet your deadlines. A smoothly running paper depends on each student working consistently on his/her job.

Turn off cell phones and mp3 players –Make sure they are off and put away EXCEPT… Test policy: phones are off and on the edge of your desk. Calling about Ad sales: legitimate calls for ad sales that are pre-approved

Bring food or accessories into class. –Food and drinks not only cause messes, mice, and roaches, but they can also irreversibly damage expensive technology in this room. –Water is okay if it has a screw-top lid. –Beauty and hair accessories should be used outside of class.

Cheat. –Plagiarism or cheating of any kind is not tolerated. –It is an automatic D-1 and a zero on the assignment. –It’s bad journalism and won’t be printed. –It’s not worth it!

Possible Consequences Phone calls or s home (not happy) After school detention for 30 minutes Objects will be taken (cell phones, make-up, brushes, chapstick, etc.) D-1 and office discipline PTO (don’t make Mrs. Bartlett send you there!)

Possible Rewards Phone calls or s home (happy ones) Free time in class Homework passes Being Mrs. Bartlett’s favorite student

Class Procedures As soon as you enter the classroom every day, get out your notebook, check for any handouts on the table, and begin the warm-up. Warm-ups will only be up for a limited time! Part of each class will be devoted to learning or reviewing journalistic material before moving on to or working on the current issue of the Dorian. Remain in your seats until dismissed by me. Lining up at the door is a pet peeve of mine, and it means it will actually take you LONGER to leave the classroom.

Keeping it Neat This lab is your workspace, which means you are responsible for keeping it neat. Your personal workspace and the entire classroom should be clean before you leave the room. Every Friday, students will be given tasks to help keep the room clean that factor in to your class participation grade for the quarter. Computers need to be logged off (3 rd period) or shut down (4 th period) every day.

Leaving the Classroom Leaving class is a privilege, not a requirement. Many other schools do not allow their students to leave campus during the day for Newspaper at all. Ad sale days will happen 1-2 days a month during class. The rest of your ad sales should be generated before or after school. Always check with the teacher before or after school or via if you need to interview a student for an article or get a photo. Do not interrupt class without permission! Abusing the privilege of leaving the classroom will result in losing it and no longer being allowed to leave the room during the day.

Being Absent We will do work every day. You will always miss something if you are not here. This course is centered around creating a product with set deadlines. You need to be in class! If you know you will be absent, let me/your editors know in advance! Work around it to get your story in on time. Bring your absence note from home and turn it in to the office first thing in the morning. Failure to meet deadlines will result in a “0” for the deadline grade for that issue. Work that comes in post-deadline will not be published.

Grading Policies 30%: Deadlines –Ad Sales –Article Deadlines –Etc. 35%: Writing Quality –Editorial Checks –Mrs. Bartlett checks –Warm-Ups 25%: Portfolio –You will be updating this throughout the quarter, and turning it in at the end of each quarter as part of your quarter test grade. 10%: Classroom Participation

Ways to Contact Me With attachments: –I do NOT check this nightly. With questions: –I DO check this nightly. Stop by Room 209 or 201 before or after school.

Important Information We will have an online newspaper as well as the paper edition this year! All of your articles will also be visible online! You will use Google Docs as a tool to help me know you’ve met your deadlines. We will work more on this soon! We will sell Parent/Tabor Community Paper subscriptions as a way to raise money this year. Info to come!
