What is Smart Grid ??? 6/2/20162

“SMART GIRD” is a technology implementation that uses advanced sensing, metering, communication, control, computation and reporting technologies to facilitate generation, transmission and distribution of electricity more effectively, economically and securely to achieve desired balancing of supply and demand. 6/2/20163

The smart grid marries information technology with our current electrical infrastructure, helping us support the energy needs of our 21st Century society. The smart grid is, in essence, an “energy Internet,” delivering real-time energy information and knowledge—empowering smarter energy choices. Considering the energy challenges we currently face, we must find a way to do more with less—and quickly. 6/2/20164

Asset Management Grid ControlSensorsCommunications Data Collection & Local Control A power system that is made up of numerous automated T&D systems, all operating in a coordinated, efficient and reliable manner. A power system that handles emergency conditions with ‘self-healing’ actions and is responsive to energy-market and utility needs. A power system that serves millions of customers and has an intelligent communications infrastructure enabling the timely, secure and adaptable information flow needed to provide power to the evolving digital economy 56/2/2016

This is the role for a smarter grid, which: Enables the integration and optimization of more renewable energy (such as wind and solar) and plug-in electric vehicles. Drives significant increases in the efficiency of our network. Empowers consumers to manage their energy usage and save money without compromising their lifestyle. 6/2/20166

Going to the next step and tying many different systems together by expanding our inter-systems communications GENERATION DISTRIBUTION TRANSMISSION USERS 6/2/20167

CharacteristicTodayTomorrow Enables Consumer Participation Little price visibility, time-of-use pricing rare, few choices Full price info, choose from many plans, prices and options, buy and sell Accommodates Generation/Storage Dominated by central generation. Little DG, DR, storage or renewable Many “plug and play” distributed energy resources complement central generation Enables New Markets Limited wholesale markets, not well integrated Mature, well-integrated wholesale markets, growth of new electricity markets Meets PQ Needs Focus on outages not power quality PQ a priority with a variety of quality/price options according to needs 106/2/2016

CharacteristicTodayTomorrow Optimizes Assets & Operates Efficiently Little integration with asset management Deep integration of grid intelligence with asset management software Self Heals Protects assets following disruption (e.g. trip relay) Prevents disruptions, minimizes impact, restores rapidly Resists Attack Vulnerable to terrorists and natural disasters Deters, detects, mitigates, and restores rapidly and efficiently 116/2/2016
