9 Weeks Current Events Journal Project Environmental Studies

You will do this 4 times… 10 Journal Articles (Title, URL) 10 “summaries” – what did you learn? –5 to10 original sentences. Articles MUST be from the 9 week grading period Articles MUST be about some environmental topic

Articles MUST come from reliable news or scientific sources Summaries must be typed (Word document), numbered, and submitted to Turnitin.com. –Plagiarism = Honor Code Violation, major grade of a zero, other consequences (like no exam exemptions, no field trips…).

A Few Reliable Sources d/2337/topic/Environmenthttp:// d/2337/topic/Environment archives/environment/ archives/environment/

Sit ‘n’ Share 30 points of this MAJOR GRADE will come from having a valid class discussion of the articles you read. Come to class prepared to discuss one or more of your articles (you may want to bring in a hard copy). If absent on the day we share, you will need to come in and present your oral summary another time.

Grading Rubric CURRENT EVENTS SUMMARIES GRADING RUBRIC Article Title (please number your summaries)1 point Date (Article from Current 9 Weeks)1 point Environmentally Relevant2 points Adequate Summary3 points TOTAL PER SUMMARY7 POINTS

Example 1. Title of Article –URL or Source (eg Sept 2011 National Geographic Magazine) –Date written/ posted online –Summary including… What happened? Where did this occur? Who was involved? What did you find interesting about this article? How does this apply to Environmental Studies?

Example 1. Water from Melting Greenland Ice Sheath May Impact Northeast US Coast Date posted: 2012/08/23 According to the National Center for Atmospheric Research, melt water from the Greenland ice sheet could alter the circulation in the ocean. This melting is expected to occur in the next 90 years. The primary area that this research focused on was the North Atlantic. If the circulation patterns change significantly, the coastal areas on America’s northeastern seaboard could be affected by rising seas up to 8 inches higher than the average global warming prediction. This translates to an overall increase in sea level for affected areas of 1 – 2 feet higher than in other coastal areas.

DUE at the end of each 9 weeks You will receive a MAJOR GRADE (same as a test or project grade) for this assignment. Turnitin.com Info for school year: –ID: –Password –DUE by the start of class –Ten points off per day it is late
