Reflecting on How You Learn Note-taking skills Why do it?

Retaining Information Studies show that people may forget: 50% of a lecture within 24hours 80% in two weeks 95% within one month If theydo not take notes.

Phases of Note-Taking Before Class Read assigned material Review notes from previous session Begin notes for each lecture on a new page Date each page of your notebook as well as date and number each handout Identify the topic being covered at the top of the page

Phases of Note-Taking During Class Listen carefully at the beginning of the lecture for an overview of the main topics of the lecture: Write down the Essential Question that should identify the goals of the day. Maintain focus to identify important information

Why does this have its own slide? Your goal is NOT to write every word of the lecture in your notes. Write down supporting information such as key points, background information, dates, key terms, definitions, examples, formulas

Common problem Students try to write down every word. By concentrating on the writing, they miss the explanation of the notes.

That evening After Class Review, revise, or edit your notes as soon as possible Rewrite notes if necessary In your notes summarize the main points of the lecture Brain research identifies this as a crucial time: Review what when on in class EVERY DAY.
