New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, BCAM, Level 2 October 4, 2015– January 18, 2016 Germany’s Weimar Republic, established between the end of World War I and the Nazi rise to power, was a thriving laboratory of art and culture. As the country experienced unprecedented social, economic, and political upheaval, many artists rejected Expressionism in favor of a new realism to capture this emerging society. Dubbed New Objectivity, its adherents turned a cold eye on the new Germany: its desperate prostitutes, crippled war veterans, and alienated urban landscapes, but also its emancipated New Woman, modern architecture, and mass-produced commodities. Organized around five thematic sections and featuring 150 works by more than 50 artists, the exhibition mixes painting, photography, and works on paper to bring them into a visual dialogue.

Gallery Report Write 1000 words (minimum), typed on plain white paper Your report should contain the following: Select two works in the exhibition, one a photograph, and one NOT a photograph. Compare and/or contrast the two works that you have selected. Make sure that you incorporate in your discussion each of the components mentioned on the next page in Guidelines for Writing Your Narrative. Staple your proof of attendance to your paper. Due November 10, 2015 This report is worth a maximum of 100 points as a Gallery Report / 50 points as extra credit.

Guidelines for Writing Your Narrative In writing your Gallery Report, be sure to include the following: 1. Organize your essay, write clearly and include all components of the report. 2. Use appropriate terminology and technical descriptions, and correctly identify artistic styles 3. Place the art within the correct historical context 4. Effectively describe and analyze your aesthetic reaction to the art 5. Effectively describe and analyze the relationship between the photograph and the other form of art that you have selected.
