 still life n. pl. still lifes  1. Representation of inanimate objects, such as flowers or fruit, in painting or photography.  2. A painting, picture, or photograph of inanimate objects.

 You should know by now that pictures can speak like language. One of the roles of an artist is to visually communicate an idea through their art. So what objects from the still-life sent a message to you? What message did you receive from the painting?

 In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with still life painting in Flanders and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods.symbolicstill lifepaintingFlandersNetherlands  Vanitas painting show objects that represent the 5 senses, wealth, passing of time and death.  DRAW a Graphic Organizer to chart the objects each artist used to represent each of these things:  Sight  Taste  Touch  Hear  Smell  Time  Death

This is an example of Photorealism still-life. Flack used ideas from traditional Vanitas painting when planning this painting. Your Vanitas Drawing project will be a collection of symbolic objects that you photograph and then draw or draw directly from set up on table.

 We are warming up our drawing skills today by drawing objects from 6 table groups, shading(VALUE) and adding shadow to make things look more 3-d.  Rotate to a new table every 5-10 minutes  Use pencil and 12 x18 paper  Try to get your hand and your eye to move together when drawing, slow down, talk less and draw more:0)- sign you work.
