Concept Talk How does technology help adventurers reach new places?

How did technology help us learn more about the Titanic and what actually happened on that fateful night? Using Hi-tec to find the Titanic

Think about how technology might help adventurers. What adventures or discoveries do you know about that the adventurer used technology to accomplish their goals?

Turn to page What technology allows the people in these photos to explore? Why might this woman be out in a kayak with a GPS? What words can be used to describe someone who uses technology like this hang glider?

Listen: The story “Tea Leaves and Buried Treasure” is about a boy who sets out to find a pirate’s treasure. Listen for : Trunk Foreign Seafaring treasure

Trunk- a big sturdy box used to store clothes for trips My grandmother’s trunk was filled with wonderful, old clothes and hats. Foreign- dealing with another country The pirates visited a foreign land. Teach your partner these words

Graphic Sources A graphic source is a chart, table, graph, map, illustration, or photograph. They help readers gain an overview of the text and to locate information. What graphic source is on page 201? The map shows the Titanic’s course and where it sank. The maps coordinates tell me exactly where the ship went down.

 Let’s read Shipwreck.  I want you identify where the Titanic departed and where it was headed.  You will have to infer to understand what you read.

The passage tell s us that people want to find sunken ships to prevent similar accidents and to learn about old ship designs. I know that technology makes advances every year. Researchers might be using more advance equipment to dive deeper, stay underwater longer, and take better pictures of the wreckage. Maybe that’s why they continue to go out year after year and look at the wrecks.

Cramped-not having much space The space in the sub felt cramped. Debris-broken pieces The ground was covered with scattered debris from the accident. Teach your partner these words.

Interior- inside The interior of the ship was covered in mud. Ooze- slimy mud The parts sank in the slimy mud on the bottom of the ocean. Teach your partner these words.

Robotic-computer controlled He moved the robotic arm to pick up the rock. Sediment- solid matter that settles at the bottom of a liquid The sediment swirled around in the current. Teach your partner these words.

Sonar- equipment that uses sound waves to locate underwater objects The sonar showed there was a ship on the bottom of the ocean. Teach your partner this word
