Successful Readers…. Read aloud at a pace they would use in conversation. Do not read too quickly or too slowly for readers to understand.

Pets are the hobby of my brother Bert. He used to go to school with a mouse in his shirt. A cause is the reason that something happens. An effect is what happens as a result. In a story, one event causes another event to happen. The cause is why something happens. The effect is what actually happens.

A cause may have more than one effect. Also, an effect may have more than one cause. The words because, when, then, and so may signal a cause and effect relationship.

Strong winds blew across the ocean, rocking the ship violently. Then a huge wave, whipped up by the storm, crashed onto the deck. “Take down the sails!” the captain shouted. The sailors worked fast to get control of their ship. When the last sail was down, the rocking slowed. The soaked crew members breathed a sigh of relief.
