Computer Control Lou Loftin FETC Conference Orlando, FL January 28 – 31, 2014

Workshop Agenda K’NEX Computer Control Set Key Concepts STEM Standard Alignments Build & Program

Computer Control 699 K’NEX Pieces Builds 5 models (1 at a time) Supports 2-3 students working as a team. Includes K’NEX parts, software, interface, inputs/outputs, building instructions and teacher guide.

Key Concepts Exploratory and Discovery Learning Active engagement to find solutions Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Systems and Organization Design and alter machine operations to meet stated needs Forces, Energy & Motion Design & Engineering Design Process Communicate Mathematical thinking Sequential thinking and patterns Invention and Innovation Troubleshooting and Optimization Testing, evaluating and modifying

NSES Science Content Standards Alignment Unifying Concepts and Processes – Systems- Evidence, models and explanation – Form and function- Change, constancy and measurement Science as Inquiry – Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry – Understanding about scientific inquiry Physical Science – Motions and forces – Transfer of energy Science and Technology – Abilities of technological design – Understanding about science and technology

Next Generation Science Standards Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled. Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. Generate and compare multiple solutions to a problem based on how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the design problem.

ITEEA Standards Alignments The characteristics and scope of technology – New products and systems can be developed to solve problems or to help do things that could not be done without the help of technology. The core concepts of technology – Systems Thinking. – Different technologies involve different sets of processes. The attributes of design – Design is a creative planning process that leads to useful products and systems. Engineering Design – Modeling, testing, evaluating, and modifying are used to transform ideas into practical solutions.

NCTM Standards Alignments Numbers and Operations Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems. Work flexibly with fractions, decimals, and percents to solve problems. Understand meanings of operations and how they relate to one another. Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates. Data Analysis and Probability Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them. Collect data using observation, surveys, and experiments. Represent data using tables & graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, & line graphs.

Common Core Standards Alignments Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grades Mathematical practices - associated with mathematics at all grade levels 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Expressions and Equations Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.
