Developing a Thesis ?? ?? ?? ? ? ?? ?? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

The Thesis The thesis statement is the single most important aspect of your paper; it is, essentially, the justification for its very existence.

The Framework for Your Paper A good thesis serves as the blue print or plan for your paper The thesis can be broken down into sections of your paper

Generating Questions Your thesis statement needs to answer a question about the topic you’d like to explore. Your job is to figure out what question you’d like to answer... For example...

A research question... addresses an issue, problem, or controversy and is answered with a conclusion, otherwise known as a thesis. The thesis... is based on an analysis and interpretation of information and materials. Does the death penalty violate the Eighth Amendment’s protection against “cruel and unusual punishment”? The use of the death penalty as punishment for a defendant is wrong because it violates the “cruel and unusual punishment” clause of the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The PROCESS... Topic to Thesis Select your TOPIC Narrow the topic Generate research question(s) Develop your POV/perspective/angle Answer your question with your statement of belief... your THESIS
