THE HIMALAYAS

FACTS ABOUT THE HIMALAYAS Himalaya means ‘mountain of snow’ There are over 100 mountains million years old The mountains in the Himalayas grow 1cm per six months The summit of Mt.Everest made of marine limestone

ANIMALS In the Himalayas, there are animals such as the golden eagles and vultures which makes homes between rocks. Some other animals are: black bears, tigers, elephants, red pandas and shrews of which some animals don’t live anywhere. This is why we need to preserve the Himalayas otherwise they may die. People depend on yaks for meat and butter. They also use yaks for transportation.

WEATHER In the Himalayas, there would probably be monsoons, floods, and snowstorms; the higher the elevation, the more snow there is. the Himalayan range has about 15,000 glaciers which stores 12,000 km3 of fresh water. The Siachen glacier( the second longest outside the polar region) is in the Himalayas. Also the higher region is snowbound throughout the year.

LANDSCAPE The Himalayan mountain range is on the border of Nepal and India. Obviously, the highest peak is MT. Everest, the biggest in the world named after Sir George Everest. People say that the Himalayan range was formed approximately million years old! In the range there is the Siachen glacier, the second biggest outside the polar region.

TOURISM People come from everywhere to see the Himalayas ; some to climb Mount Everest and some for sightseeing. Some other tourists just come to see the animals that live there. But at the same time tourists can be careless and cause other problems like litter and pollution. This is why tourism can be bad.
