In the Beginning… there were lecturers and students Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. ( Bob Dylan 1964) Sage on the stage Empty vessels Theories Connectivism.. Blended Learning.. Learning styles... Authentic learning.. Theory of mobile learning.. Lifelong learning.. Times they are a-changin ’

Challenges Time Bad attendance En masse – 1 size fits all Not point of need Different students - for different levels of IL - for different things - for different times Why podcasting The students Millennials – technologically literate, multi tasking, instant access, Many don’t have access to a computer Most have cell phones and they always have them with them

Podcasting In the library As a supplement / complement Save time - no repeats Build up library of podcasts Activity time in the classroom Blended learning Collaboration with Depts As a stand alone …..Access at any time…… point of need …. Reach students in their space ….……Use a format they are familiar with… ….Extend beyond classroom wall (learning and time)…..options…… What is the point of having library resources if no-one know about them?

Podcast on Podbean Would students and library staff be amenable to podcasting as an educational tool? Replayed - understanding Remember like music Shy to ask Language easier than reading (2 nd language) Catch up tool (strikes) Most students have cell phones Use for additional info Potential as a standalone  Not interactive  Feedback not immediate  Not have phones  Cost  Poor attendance  Generation divide

Students are open to educational podcasts - already listening to other podcasts Student podcasts- “Hey, it would be difficult”! Podcasting doesn’t replace face to face - complement or supplement Access and Cost - Bluetooth - Website Structure carefully to avoid bad attendance or non listening KISS Encourage to listen again and anticipation of next Some points to ponder.. Students liked that my voice was different !! like that it’s a real person

Finally I am here....At the start Next installment… …..Making podcasts Stand alones ECP lessons Collaboration… In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's mind there are few.
