Warmup 1)Why did the ice melt faster on the aluminum block than on the wood block? 2)In your experiment, why did the ice melt fastest when water was running over it?

What does it mean for something to be hot or cold? Hot – particles move faster. Cold – particles move slower. How fast the particles move is a form of energy called thermal energy.

What is heat? The transfer of this thermal energy from something hotter to something colder.

What is temperature? A measure of how fast the particles are moving.

Because temperature measures how fast particles are moving, there has to be a minimum temperature. There has to be a temperature at which the particles stop moving. This temperature is called absolute zero. This minimum temperature is -460_ͦF or -273_ͦC or _0_K.

What are some common ways that heat is transferred? Radiation - Heat travels through space, the hotter object does not have to touch the colder object. Example: Sun heats the earth. Conduction - Heat is transferred by contact. The two objects are touching each other. Example: Metal coil stove top burner heats by contact. Convection - Heat is transferred through a fluid by hotter particles circulating to the top. (Heat rises). Example: Heat is transferred in the atmosphere by circulating air.
