The Bunsen Burner Parts, Safety, Lighting Procedure

Parts A. Orifice (mouth) B. Barrel (adjusts the intensity of the flame temperature) C. Air Adjustment D. Needle Valve (controls the height of the flame) E. Gas intake F. Base

Safety Precautions Check yourself (hair, clothes, jewelry, goggles, shoes) Inspect the barrel Inspect the hose Know where the fire safety equipment is located Do NOT put anything in the flame unless directed to do so by the teacher Do not leave the flame unattended at any time Turn off when not in use No off task behavior at any time!!! (You will lose your Bunsen Burner privileges)

Steps for Lighting and Adjusting the Bunsen Burner 1. Firmly attach hose to gas jet and Bunsen Burner 2. Make sure both barrel and needle valve are both closed. Open the Barrel (about 3 turns) and needle valve (about 2 turns) 3. Have the flint ready and open the gas jet 4. Strike the flint over the orifice (mouth) of the Bunsen Burner 5. Adjust the flame height (6-7cm) by turning the needle valve

Steps for Lighting and Adjusting the Bunsen Burner 6. Turn the barrel counter clock wise until you see a blue inner flame. The outer flame may be barley visible. 7. When completed, shut off Bunsen Burner by: close the gas jet close the needle valve and close the barrel let cool down before you move from lab station.

Flame A. Outer Flame – This is the second hottest part of the flame. May be not be visible. B. Hottest Region at tip of inner blue flame. C. Inner blue cone – This is the coolest part of the flame.
