WHAT IS A TYPHOON? A typhoon, like typhoon Haiyan, is a type of vicious storm that is characterized by circular or spiral winds, which can be hundreds of kilometres in diameter. Typhoons are called Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific, Tropical Cyclones in the Indian Ocean and Typhoons in the western Pacific. Typhoons are measured on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Typhoon Haiyan began on Friday 8 th November and affected islands of the Philippines, the two worst affected islands by the typhoon were Samar and Layte.

THE EXTENT OF THE TYPHOON

Typhoon Haiyan blasted the Philippines with winds up to 380 km/h along the largely populated coastal cities such as Tacloban, the capital of Layte. The Philippines is a poor, developing nation that is very vulnerable to these types of disasters
